About us

Folklor Dansemble Amersfoort is an enthousiastic group of about twentyfive dancers, that brings sparkling national and international performances under the guidance of choreographer Wijnand Karel.

We have an extensive Dutch repertoire of folk dances, whereas most of our other choreographies originate from the Balkan.

Our choreographies combine variation and surprise in appealing performances.

Netherlands

Folklor Dansemble Amersfoort brings a refreshing Dutch repertoire, with a multitude of dances that are performed in traditional costumes.

Audiences that are not familiar with our repertoire, are always pleasantly surprised to find that Dutch folklore dances can be so attractive.

Enjoy photographs from our Dutch series.

Holland-America

A story of goodbye's and hello's: the men emigrate to America, will the women follow them?

(of course they will, and they'll celebrate!)

Choreography: Wijnand Karel

Pierement

Against the backdrop of a typically Dutch phenomena - a street organ - we show you three dances. The melodious waltz is followed by a spicy polka and a scottisch.

Van dezen Avond

"Ik zou er van dezen avond nog eens uit vrijen gaan..."

This multivocal song about a romantic evening ends in a seducing dance. The lovers duet suffers a rude intrusion.

Choreography: Wijnand Karel

Driekwart vierkant rond

Rhytms keep changing, the dancers respond. Still surprisingly Dutch.

Bezimen

In this choreography, seven graceful dancers enter the stage on the mystical sound of Bulgarian singers.

When the other dancers join, both music and dance evolve into a festivity on the tones of a local brassband.

Trakiiski tans

Central Bulgaria (Thrace) is the origin of this series, which is performed by three couples.

Pravo trakiisko horo, Trakiiski râtsenitsa and Dzinovsko are combined into a swirling choreography.

The Dzinovsko is one of the rare Bulgarian dances that is made for couples. It distinguishes itself by the expressive arm movements and clapping of the male dancers.

Choreography: Wijnand Karel

Varnenski tans

A series from the region of the Bulgarian harbour Varna. The combination of the grace of the women and the masculinity of the men adds a special touch to this series.

Falling asleep is impossible, due to the sound of the wooden spoons and the cracking of the short whips.

Szatmár

From Hungary, FDA brings you a choreography from Szatmár, a region in the Northeast of this country. After a calm start, the tempo rapidly rises in this csárdás, a dance for couples. In bright red and white, the girls swing their wide skirts, while the men clap, stamp and slap their boots. The singing during this dance makes this choreography tough for the dancers.

Rockin’ in rhythm

Years ago, Jenö Molnár made a choreography for Folklor Dansemble Amersfoort. It shows dances from Délalföld, the Southeastern part of Hungary. The first part consists of a Karikázo (a circle dance for girls singing). The verbunk for the male dancers is followed by a slow and a quick csárdás. Wijnand Karel was inspired by this choreography and added some rock & roll-steps in the quick csárdás. He concludes with an abundant Lindyhop choreography.

Lindyhop is an Afro-American dance style from the nineteen twenties. A style where movements are earthy and fluid, and rhythm changes play an important role. The cheerful sound of Duke Ellingtons music and the funny movements of the dancers will definitely entertain the audience.

Dravamenti

This choreography originates from the southern part of Hungary, near the border with Croatia. Enjoy this cheerful and energetic choreography.

“Sedam plesaca, brzi koraci”

(seven dancers, fast steps)

This series of dances originates from the middle and northeast Serbia. Seven dancers move around with high speed steps and stamps, typically for the Walachian people, who live in northeast Serbia. The rich costumes are from the Beograd area, Serbia's capital.

Igri od istocna Makedonia

This contemporary choreography starts off with an a cappella multivocal song. The dances with different rhythms come from the regions of Maleshevo and Osogovo. Folklor Dansemble Amersfoort reveils the heart of the Balkan with this series from Eastern Macedonia:

 * Ej mori leno
 * Deli Becar
 * Berovka - Ratevka
 * Edineaska

Choreography: Wijnand Karel

Mariovska tresenica

A traditional Macedonian choreography. A powerful womens dance in which the dancers symbolize "fresh monday". In the beginning of springtime, the women of Mariovo, a region in the South of Macedonia, come out to ritually cleanse their clothing and all that reminds of the long, cold wintertime. The series is performed in traditional costumes.

Banat

Banat is a region in the Southwest of Rumania, the origin of high-paced intense dances. Marc Bout created a dance for one or two couples, in which quick steps and turns alternate. The Banat style of dancing has its roots in Gypsy and Rumanian dance styles.

Bihor

Two men from Bihor and three women from Oltenia meet in a dance.

Choreography: Junior van Rijn

Romix

A journey through Rumania.

Choreography: Daniël Sandu

Russia

Women's dance: with their long dresses, the dansers seem to float across the stage. The Russian series consists of a number of cheerful dances from different areas of former Great Russia:

Duet by a couple in city dress (Moskow)
Women dance (Ukraine) with a surprise element

Choreography:
Marlies Juffermans and Wijnand Karel

FDA incidentally offers "tailor-made" dances. Here is an impression of a Russian folklor show at a fruit conference.
